Explore Wildland Conservation in Montana and Receive a Wilderness Studies Minor

Offering a Minor in Wilderness Studies in just over one semester

Dear Faculty, Staff, Advisors, and Interested Parties,

The University of Montana’s Wilderness Institute invites your students to participate in the fall 2012 Wilderness and Civilization Program, based in Missoula. The Wilderness Institute has been offering this innovative immersion program for more than thirty years. The Wilderness and Civilization Program gives students the opportunity to step outside traditional classroom lessons to experiencetheir education through hands-on learning, extensive field work, and small interdisciplinary classes. The program offers an in-depth look at conservation strategies, and the changing culture, ecology, and politics of the NorthernRockies.

Students earn a Wilderness Studies Minor in just overone semester, making the program a great fit for students to graduate in 4 years with a minor that provides real world experience. We encourage participation of out-of-state students through National Student Exchange and other similar programs. The general applications deadline is April 1, 2012 for the fall 2012 program.

University of Washington Celebrates Peace Corps Week

at an Application Workshop March 01, 2012

More Than 2738 UW Alumni Have Served in Peace Corps Since 1961

UW Campus– To celebrate more than 50 years of service abroad, the Peace Corps will be hosting an Information Session: How to be a Competitive Applicant on March 1st at 5:00-6:30 in Thomson 125.

The Peace Corps recognizes the first week of March as Peace Corps Week to commemorate the signing of President John F. Kennedy’s executive order establishing the federal agency March 1, 1961. Broadcast quality audio and video of the historic occasion is available on the Peace Corps website.

At the special campus event, come learn about volunteer experiences, have your questions answered, and gain tips to guide you through the application process.

Peace Corps UW Campus Representative Phil Hayes – who served in Morocco (08-10) – will be at the event to share information about opportunities available with the Peace Corps, the benefits of serving with the agency, and tips to guide potential volunteers through the application process.

The University of Washington has a strong legacy with the Peace Corps. Over 2,738 alumni have served with the agency since 1961 and 110 alumni are currently serving overseas ranking the university #2 in the nation among large universities.

President Kennedy established the Peace Corps to promote world peace and friendship through three goals: helping the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women; helping promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served; and helping promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans. The Coastal Academy offers students from around the world the chance to complete short courses in marine and coastal resource management in a unique setting at the University of Antsiranana in northern Madagascar.

The Coastal Academy offers field and classroom-based courses from 2-4 weeks in Tropical Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Monitoring Methods and Management. Students have the opportunity to receive training and certification in internationally-recognised monitoring methods, including Reef Check and SeagrassWatch.

The Coastal Academy provides a unique learning environment, with courses delivered in both French and English, allowing international students to study together with students from the Western Indian Ocean. Additionally, experts and professionals from the fields of aquaculture, marine protected area management, fisheries management and more help provide students direct insights into contemporary resource management issues and provide contacts for future employment.

Course prices start at an affordable GBP495 and further details are available on our website, at www.coastal-academy.org.
