Position description: The Department of Forestry at Michigan State University is seeking a full‐time Forester to oversee the management of forested property at the Kellogg Experimental Forest, Russ Forest, and other locations. Reporting to the Department Chairperson, the Forester will be responsible for promoting, facilitating and conducting forest research, extension/outreach, and assist with teaching Forestry courses.
Responsibilities include planning, supervising and/or implementing site preparation, experimental design, planting and plantation care; application of pesticides; data collection; developing short‐ and long‐term forest management plans; maintaining research records for all experiments, treatments, results, and land‐use history; delivering educational presentations to visiting groups at various sites; assisting with and preparing for field‐based education for Forestry courses and teaching some classes and labs; supporting the development and management of Forestry extension/outreach activities; assisting with the development of proposals to carry out research, education and extension/outreach; overseeing the maintenance of grounds, buildings, equipment and operations of multiple‐use forest research sites; reviewing and monitoring notices, bids and contracts in order to ensure the fulfillment of agreements; supervising regular, part‐time and student employees; and other duties as assigned to fulfill research, education and extension missions of the Department of Forestry.

Required qualifications: Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Forestry, Agriculture or a related field; one to three years of related an progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in equipment operation, land management and pesticide application; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Other skills and/or physical abilities required to perform the duties of the position include bending, walking over uneven terrain, and standing for long periods. Working and supervising work during inclement or uncomfortable, but not dangerous, weather conditions will be required. Position may require a Pesticide Applicator Certificate to be obtained within one year of employment. Possession of a valid vehicle operator’s license is required.
Preferred qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a combination of educational background and professional experience in 1) forest and grounds management, 2) research/teaching support, 3) supervision, and 4) community outreach. A graduate degree in Forestry or closely related field with at least one degree in Forestry is preferred.
