In 2015-2016, the Briarcrest k-6 Elemntary School Parent
Teacher Association worked with a UW senior (Yifan Li, Community, Environment, and Planning’16) to create a design for Briarcrest Elementary’s outdoor classroom and garden (a.k.a The Briar Patch). Yifan took the project as her senior capstone project, and she engaged teachers, parents, and students in the design process. Her project deliverable was a design for the outdoor classroom and garden, and the implementation of the seats in the outdoor classroom. A link to a video about the Briar Patch is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RwsPbOVfac&feature=youtu.be
The school garden is not implemented yet. Since Yifan graduated in June 2016, the Briarcrest Parent Teacher Association is looking for a garden enthusiast to make the Briar Patch complete and real! They would like to partner with another student to help realize the plans that were laid last year. They are interested in virtually any discipline that relates to this project, particularly environmental education. This student will help to take the next steps in setting up the garden space in early spring, marketing, social media, fundraising through grant applications, scholarships and private donations, assisting teachers with curriculum recommendations for use in this space, community speaking engagements and partnership building, and more. They greatly appreciate the critical partnership through UW and at the positive influence it has had on their student and staff community. They are flexible in how the student will fit this into their capstone project!
