Seattle City Light Environmental Equity Student Intern Announcement

Seattle City Light is hiring an intern to look at environmental/race/social justice within their policies and programs.

This student intern will be working directly with implementing and embedding an environmental equity and social justice lens within the environmental program and policies at Seattle City Light.  This is a paid internship and hours will be flexible with school schedules.

The program works to educate City Light employees on strategies to meet this goal, strives to identify and change internal policies that are hurdles, and works with community partners to identify areas of opportunities to further environmental equity in everything we do. The Environmental Equity Intern will have the opportunity to support these goals and make an impact on a new program that is still in development.

 Job Responsibilities:

During this internship, the intern will be specifically responsible for:

  • Developing program marketing materials with guidance from program staff and the communications team;
  • Creating and delivering PowerPoint presentations to key internal City of Seattle and community stakeholders;
  • Assisting in development of training materials;
  • Assisting in the facilitation of Environmental Equity and Race and Social Justice training for City Light staff and key internal and community stakeholders;
  • Assisting in the development of community outreach strategies;
  • Attending community events.

This internship will benefit the student through the following learning outcomes:

  • Implementation of the Equity and Environment agenda;
  • Exposure to and creating community engagement and inclusion strategies;
  • Building skills in addressing equity and inclusion in municipal government.

 Qualifications:

Education:  This position is open to senior undergraduate and graduate students (as of the start of the internship) studying Environmental Justice, Sociology, Environmental Policy, Public Administration, Race and Social Justice, Public Health Policy, or a related major. Undergraduate students must possess at least a 2.0 GPA at the time of application and throughout the internship. Graduate students must possess and maintain a 3.0 GPA.

The student must be enrolled in accredited college courses, with a part-time or full-time course load, leading to a degree or certificate relevant to the internship.

Desired Qualifications: Ideally the candidate will possess a passion for and commitment to community engagement, public policy development, environmental health, race and social justice, equity and inclusion, and environmental justice. Basic computer skills and some experience with promotional and communications strategies is preferred.

 Additional Information:

Internship Duration and Hours: 
The timeframe of the internship will be June 2017 to June 2018. The candidate must be available to work 40 hours/week during the summer and up to 20 hours/week when classes are in session. Work hours will be flexible to accommodate the intern’s academic schedule.
