Have you seen the CSF’s new and improved Funding Cycle (FC) Model yet? The CSF now has 3 funding cycles per year, each lining up with the academic quarter — making it easier for students to receive funding and carry out projects during the academic year. Don’t forget to mark your calendar for key dates above.

Winter CSF & EIC Brainstorming Mixer
Friday, February 1st. 3:30-5p
ECC Unity RoomOn Friday, February 1st from 3:30 to 5:00 pm in the ECC Unity Room, join the CSF team, Environmental Innovation Challenge (EIC) and a number of sustainability project leads featuring presentations of their final products and outcomes. There will be an opportunity to get involved in a brainstorming activity and gain knowledge on how you can have an impact by applying for a CSF grant / submitting to the EIC. This is a great opportunity for you to learn from project experts and get help with your own potential projects in mind, or just have a fun time socializing with others who are interested in sustainability! Speaker Event: The Power of The Diaspora

Join the speaker event: The Power of the Diaspora hosted by the UW Africa Now group on Thursday, January 17th in the ECC Black Room from 5:30 to 7p. Bénédicte Bicaba, a UW Medical graduate, will be discussing her experience as President of the youth education non-profit Botiminto and her journey to becoming an influential leader in her Burkinbé (Burkina Faso) community. This is a lead up event for the Africa Now Conference taking place on April 20th, 2019. The 2017-2018 Africa Now Conference was funded by the CSF.

BSU Legacy Soiree

Join the Black Student Union Legacy Soiree annual celebration on Saturday, February 2nd from 6-9p to celebrate excellence within black communities at the UW and the greater Seattle area. The celebration, partly funded by the CSF, will feature live music, performances, honoraria, keynote speakers, catered dinner, and more. The Black Student Union of UW Seattle will also recognize ten minority students from high schools all around the greater Seattle area and encourage their attendance to the UW. Your attendance at this event will also provide an opportunity for input on scholarship opportunities for underrepresented students!

Washington Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference (WOHESC)

February 25-27
Husky Union Building
University of Washington

This year, the University of Washington will be hosting the annual Washington Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference. The three day event will take place from February 25th to the 27th in the Husky Union Building.

The regional conference focuses on advancing equity, diversity and inclusion while addressing local challenges for the Pacific Northwest. Students, Faculty, and Staff from Washington and Oregon state institutions of higher education will come together to engage in workshops, network, attend learning sessions, and be a part of a collaborative & action-oriented program.

Limited number of complimentary student applications are available. Apply for a free registration here by January 18th.

PROJECT SUCCESS STORIES

Meal Matchup

Meal Matchup is a project fighting food waste on campus and providing resources to the community. This student-led team facilitates donation of food from UW dining halls to local nonprofits. To date they have been successful at producing an interactive website, tracking the amount of food ending up in compost, and delivering food to communities in need with the help of UW Carlson Service Learning volunteers. EcoReps Solar Table

The CSF-funded Ecoreps Solar Table has arrived on campus. You can now find the solar charging tables at the HUB south outdoor patio. The table has the ability to charge 71-150 devices a day and store four days’ worth of charge. With the installation of this type of solar power, this project is helping to connect students directly with sustainable and mindful energy consumption across campus.

We welcome you to use the solar table to your own advantage in the near future and make sure to catch the CSF team hosting open office hours here during spring and summer quarter!

Earth Games 60 Second Sustainability

The CSF-funded Earth Games “60 Second Sustainability” project is live!! “Got a minute to save the planet? This fun, frantic mini-game collection highlights the great work of student organizations at University of Washington that work on initiatives related to sustainability. Play 21 different minigames — each taking only seconds.”

Electric Bicycle Mail Delivery

The CSF- Funded Electric Mail Bike program continues to improve campus sustainability with its fleet of 5 electric bicycles. Not only did the program recently win the 2018 Husky Green Award, they also continue to hit a number of others milestones. Here are some ways the project has been successful thus far:

  • 3 large diesel trucks have been taken off the road since 2018 fiscal year, which saves the University about $30,000 / year.
  • Bikes have traveled over 12,445 miles as of December 2018.
  • Saving .02 metric ton (44 lb) of CO2 per week (entire fleet).
  • 60 average miles per week travelled per bike.
  • Currently bikes delivering to UW’s Campus, U-District, Stadium Area, U-Village, Sandpoint way, Eastlake, Bellevue and hoping to start delivering to South Lake Union.
  • Mail deliveries to 455 Departments across UW.

UW Solar Life Sciences Building Rooftop Array
Award: $50,000 ($200,000 total)UW-Solar is collaborating with Perkins+Will and UW-Biology to install a 100 kW solar array on the roof of the Life Sciences Building. The solar array will generate approximately 105,000 kWh of energy per year. This will reduce the carbon footprint of the building by nearly 80 metric tons of CO2e per year. Additional funding was made available through CSF’s partnership with the Student Technology Fee (STF).

Precious Plastics
Award: $20,796Precious Plastics aims to build a small, safe DIY plastics recycling workshop in the Maple Hall Area 01 Maker Space. The workspace will consist of four machines that shred, melt, compress, and mold used plastic, so it can be transformed into 3D printing filament for creating usable products. Additional funding was made available through CSF’s partnership with the Student Technology Fee (STF).

The Black Student Union Legacy Soiree
Award: $1,000The Black Student Union Legacy Soiree is an annual celebration and banquet that centers excellence within the Black communities at the University of Washington and in the greater Seattle area. The Black Student Union is also putting in essential effort in continuing to fundraise for their endowment fund, providing as a scholarship for underrepresented students.

Diversity In Psychology (DIP)
Award: $1,000Diversity in Psychology is an RSO that was created in response to the alarming lack of diversity and representation in the field of Psychology. DIP extended their goals and ideas to high school students in King County by hosting a conference on November 10th held at the UW’s Ethnic Cultural Center that focused on familiarizing students with life at the University of Washington and highlighting the importance of representation in the field of psychology.

Interested in getting involved in Earth Day 2019? There is an opening for a paid position as Earth Day coordinator. Help plan this event and coordinate student volunteers by working 5-10 hours a week starting between now and the end of April. Visit the website to learn more about the opportunity. The Diversity Leadership Conference is a half-day conference designed for UW students to develop their leadership skills through a series of workshops and sessions with leaders from the UW and community at large. The conference is co-hosted by the Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center, the Career & Internships Center, and Housing and Food Services and is open to all undergraduate students. Save the date for the 2019 Diversity Leadership Conference and make sure to check back next week here when registration opens! The CSF will be hosting a workshop on ways to get involved with sustainability on campus!

For the second year the CSF has received block funding from the Student Technology Fee! This allows for the CSF to provide an additional $200,000 per year to innovative technological projects that also have a sustainability focus and provides students with greater accessibility to this resource! Thank you to the STF for helping advance sustainability at UW!
