Graduating Seniors: the Pipeline Project is hiring!

Pipeline is hiring for two full time positions to begin September 1st, 2019. Applications are due in early May!

The Pipeline Project Education Equity AmeriCorps member recruits, trains and supports UW students to become tutors in elementary, middle and high schools in the Seattle area. They will also manage a team of UW student interns who will assist with Pipeline programming. In addition, they will be involved with planning Pipeline’s rural outreach program Literacy Arts Alternative Spring Break. The member will also have opportunities to assist with other Pipeline initiatives and take leadership in additional areas they choose.

Earth Day Restoration Work Party at the Arboretum – Saturday, April 20th

UW students are invited to join us at an Earth Day Service Event at the Washington Park Arboretum this Saturday, April 20th from 9am – 1pm.

We start at 9am, at the Crabapple Meadow, south of the Visitors Center, with free coffee and breakfast snacks!

All project materials, tools and gloves will be provided – volunteers just need to show up in close toed shoes!

Groups will head out into the Arboretum to complete gardening and restoration projects including weeding, invasive species removal, and mulching. Groups will return to the meadow at 1pm, where we will have some free light lunch! Stick around and enjoy a beautiful day in the park.

Want to get involved with fellow students, work on networking, and design and build?

Think Outside the Park is a new group on campus and we are looking for designers that are interested in applying what we have learned through classes and studios in the realm of design activism. We will be working toward a physical goal of art/design installation in August for the Design in Public festival. There will be research, design, community outreach, grant writing, and physical installation components for this project (basically something for everyone).

We will be discussing our project topic two different days to include as many people as possible, Thursday, April 11th at 6pm in Gould Court and Friday, April 12th at 5:30pm in Gould Court.

Reasons to partake at any commitment levels:

  • Practice producing thought provoking potential policy changing installation.

  • Great networking opportunity for connecting with professionals and community members.

  • Learn techniques/practice having difficult conversations with the community and potentially policy makers

King County Environmental Summer Internship Opportunities

Salary: $17.26 – $24.63 Hourly

SUMMARY: The King County Water and Land Resources Division of the Department of Natural Resources and Parks seeks several full-time interns for this summer. Assignments will be to one of the following areas, providing experience in the practical application of coursework in a large-scale, public sector organization.

WHO MAY APPLY: Positions are open to college level students currently enrolled and continuing in the fall 2019 in full or part-time status at an accredited university/college with coursework in the described areas. Proof of full or part-time enrollment status is required. Most positions require a valid driver’s license.

Descriptions of Internship Opportunities

1.Agriculture/Snoqualmie Valley Agricultural Land Strategic Plan Intern

In 2017, the Fish, Farm, Flood watershed planning effort identified a suite of recommended actions and three task forces that would advance the efforts focused on salmon recovery; agriculture production and preservation; and flood risk reduction within the Snoqualmie River Valley. The recommended actions included an assessment of land-based assets on farmlands in the Snoqualmie Agricultural Production District; creation of a plan for needed improvements to farmland assets; and determination of a minimum number of acres of agricultural resource lands required to preserve a viable agriculture sector. The Agriculture Intern will collect, compile and analyze existing land use data; survey farmers to collect new data; and support the project leader with meeting logistics.

2.Communications Intern

The successful candidate will work with the Communications Manager of the Water and Land Resources Division to learn communications tactics and planning functions. In addition, the intern will be exposed to and carry out inclusive communications with a goal of equitable outcomes for all residents and enhancing that aspect of our work. Prepare written articles for publication; pursue story development; coordinate photos, videos and graphics; support the development and implementation of strategic communications plans; manage social media channels; and coordinate newsletter and web page content.

3.Forestry/King County Forest Plan Intern

In response to the 2015 Strategic Climate Action Plan, King County is embarking on an effort to develop a 30-year plan to “re-tree King County.” This effort will bring together partners to “develop a sustainable 30-year plan to maintain and enhance tree cover countywide that identifies specific approaches, including public and private partnerships, geographic focus areas, and number of trees.” The Forestry Intern will focus on the first step in this process, which includes an assessment and compilation of existing information on tree cover in King County, including current tree cover, forest ownership patterns, and trends in tree cover in rural and urban areas of the county, as well as other information relevant to this planning effort and support the project leader with meeting logistics. The information will form the basis of the first chapter of the 30-Year Plan.

4.Environmental Summer Internships/Rivers and Floodplain Management

The Rivers and Floodplain Management Section of WLRD is hiring two summer interns. The position duration is approximately three months.

The internship will provide hands-on experience with many aspects of managing a flood risk reduction project. This internship will include a mix of field work and office work. The intern will assist engineers and planners with site observation and documentation on a construction site and compile data. The intern may also assist staff with project management duties such as updating project web pages, preparing graphics, and digitizing information. You must be able to commit to working 30-40 hours per week during the entire period to be eligible.

5.Microbiology/Aquatic Toxicology Intern

Students will learn existing analytical testing methods for common environmental pathogens (microbiology and algal toxins) found in current King county monitoring programs. In the microbiology laboratory the student will learn core microbiology techniques to isolate and identify bacteria from environmental matrices. The student will learn how to make culture media used to separate and identify the target organisms of interest. In the aquatic toxicology laboratory the student will learn freshwater algae identification skills with a focus on toxin producing types. The student will be trained in the operation of FlowCAM® digital imaging system and image recognition software for the automated classification of freshwater algae in lake water samples. The student will learn how to perform quality control for the test methods commonly used in these monitoring programs. The student will also perform some side by side tests with experienced analysts to check their laboratory techniques.

North Idaho wildlife center needs help

In the immortal words of the Beatles:

HELP – please

That’s right, we need some help and fast! As you are all aware, each year we contact local universities and post the spring/summer internship position seeking someone to provide wild animal care for the nongame mammals, birds and reptiles in need. We chose a candidate but sadly, due to a “devastating family situation”, this person will not be arriving in three weeks as was arranged.

If you have ever thought it would be rewarding to help local wildlife in need. Call us.

If you enjoy time in nature, and talking about the wildlife you see, we need you.

If you travel to Sandpoint several times each week, we need you.

I am currently scheduling the orientation and training sessions. Sign up! Seeking volunteers (yes fuel reimbursement may be available) to help with wild animal care, nature path guide, animal taxi, education and outreach.

American Heritage Wildlife Foundation is 100% community supported, this means we operate exclusively with volunteers and donated funds. Last year over 4,000 hours were recorded and around 100 animals were given aid.

Without someone here to respond to the telephone calls, feed the nestling birds, make sure the milk replacer formula is fresh, clean the enclosures, do the laundry, put away the dishes, attend the public outreach events, offer educational programs, and more… we cannot continue.

We expect the volunteers to be mature, dedicated, trustworthy, and committed. We take the responsibility to this community and the wildlife we serve very seriously and expect the same from the volunteers. If you are this person, I want to meet you.

Phone calls for wild animals in need have already begun.

APRIL Sustainaiblity Professional Development Program

APRIL Sustainability Professional Development Programme (ASPDP) is an 18-month long management-trainee programme run by APRIL Group. APRIL is one of the largest pulp and paper manufacturing companies in the world, with plantations and manufacturing operations in Riau, Indonesia.

The ASPDP programme is divided into three rotations, each covering different roles within the APRIL sustainability department, with mentoring from senior management provided throughout the course. Following the completion of the programme, candidates are eligible for fast track promotion, depending on their performance.

We recently opened applications for the 2019 intake. Applications are open to graduate students who have prior working experience (including internships), and who preferably have some demonstrable knowledge and understanding of the forestry, environment, and sustainability sectors.

Comparative Urban Studies–US and Quebec/Canada: A Study Abroad Course

Audience: Students in the UW College of Built Environments (CBE), Canadian Studies, other departments in the university and departments at UW Tacoma and UW Bothell.

Course Description: Comparative research in urban studies has been a major development in the last decade but little has been done to provide US students with a comprehensive knowledge of Québec cities and how they compare with US cities.

The aim of the course is to introduce students to theoretical and methodological aspects of comparative urban research by providing on-site case studies of Québec cities.

The estimated cost of the trip for each student, including airfare, meals, lodging and ground transportation is $1,500. The course is open to Juniors and Seniors, as well as Graduate students, for three to six hours credits.

We will visit three Quebec cities – Montréal, Québec City and Ottawa, where a number of professors, government officials and other urban experts will give lectures and tours. The course will examine similarities and differences between U.S. and Québec cities. We will look more particularly at current urban issues confronting communities in Québec. We will study the physical layout of cities, urban design and urban growth, problems related to the environment, governmental institutions, as well as historical, social and cultural factors specific to Quebec cities.

Students will write a paper on a topic related to urban issues encountered in Québec. The course introduces the logic of comparative research in the social sciences and applies its theory and methodology to the study of Québec cities, as compared to US cities. Its multidisciplinary and comparative character develops the ability to interpret and understand urban changes, changing demographics and to analyze appropriate and sustainable strategies and policies to address urban problems in Québec and the US. Students will gain a better understanding of economic, political, social, and cultural differences between Québec and the US. The course will also help them better understand the diversity of the contemporary urban world in Québec and the US and the importance of the social-cultural factors specific to each region and city, in finding solutions to common urban problems. By the end of the course, students are expected to be conversant in cross-border urban issues in Québec and the US.

Requirements: Students are expected to keep a daily journal on the things they have seen and learned. In addition, a term paper is required that focuses on some aspect of comparison with a subject with the United States. The 6 credit term paper would be a longer version of the 3 credit paper. The topic should be discussed with the instructors.

Program on Climate Change Spring Symposium – invitation to students

The Program on Climate Change (PCC) invites you to attend our third annual Spring Symposium on Saturday, April 27 from 10 am to 3 pm in Ocean Sciences Building (OCN) 425. This exciting event features interdisciplinary presentations on climate-related research, outreach, and education by students and postdoctoral researchers. A light breakfast, catered lunch, and afternoon refreshments will be provided. This will be a great opportunity for networking and conversation with researchers across UW who are interested in climate.
